The Impact of Therapeutic Riding on Psychomotor Factors in Children of Pre-School age With Special Needs

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact that the psychomotor intervention may have under the Therapeutic Riding. Four children participated in this study (four and five years old) with special needs. The methodology used in this study was the single-subject design, through the ABA, where A was the period of individual assessments, with no intervention, and B consisted of the intervention period, which the implementation of Psychomotor Program of Therapeutic Riding based on the Psychomotor Battery (FONSECA, 2010) and the Body Skills (WERDER; BRUININKS, 1988). The intervention took place over a period of 12 weeks, in weekly sessions of one hour, with a total of 18 weeks. The results showed that with the implementation of Psychomotor Program of Therapeutic Riding, there was an overall increase in performance in tone, lateralization, notion of body, space-time structure, gross motor skills and fine motor skills for all children in comparison with the period without the implementation of Psychomotor Program of Therapeutic Riding. Therefore, this study illustrates the importance of Therapeutic Riding as an effective and appropriate practice with children with special needs.
