A análise de Antonio Gramsci sobre a sociedade civil, bem como seu estudo do papel dos intelectuais na sociedade e o conceito de hegemonia, foram, há muito, reconhecidos como uma das mais originais e importantes características de sua teoria política em Cadernos do Cárcere. Estudiosos debateram extensamente as diferenças e semelhanças entre os conceitos de sociedade civil de Hegel e de Gramsci, se estes representariam um significativo afastamento do pensamento marxista tradicional e o lugar que ocupam (ou deveriam ocupar) na história da filosofia política.
