Abstract

Our intention is to contribute to the reflection on the proposal of the unitary school, elaborated by Antonio Gramsci. Through the analysis of some assumptions of his thought, we aim to situate the school as a basic element in the struggle for hegemony. The sources analyzed for the work were some writings of the Italian thinker, fundamentally those elaborated during his imprisonment. Based on this analysis, and considering that the school is not an island, but an institution that reflects and refracts the reality in which it is inserted, we demonstrate through the work that the unitary school represents the real democratization of access to knowledge historically systematized by humanity. It is the radical and profound antithesis to the bourgeois, dualistic, and segregationalist school defended by yesterday's and today's fascists.
