Abstract

This article intends to demonstrate that the political organization of the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), at the end of its second decade of existence, was based on conceptions, structures and procedures that can be conceived as a translation of gramscian thought within the scope of practice. To achieve our objective, we will begin with a brief reflection on the context immediately prior to the birth of the movement, in which the diffusion of Gramsci's thought in Latin America underwent a remarkable expansion and, consequently, appropriation in both academic and political environments in Brazil. In this context, the role played by Comunidades Eclesiais de Base and Teologia da Libertação stands out as disseminators of a set of theoretical and political marxist precepts, contributing to the practical appropriation of Gramsci by the MST. To address our main object, we will analyze the practice of the “mystic” and the organizational and formative structure of the MST.
