This research aims to examine the reception in Brazil of the Gramscian concept of subaltern and also to understand its conception conveyed in debates and academic productions. From the socio-historic path that the concept follows, it finds, throughout its analysis, conceptions different from the one formulated by Gramsci, in the conjuncture in which it was elaborated. The review and rereading of the term goes against projects that attribute different meanings and practices to the original formulation. Currents of thought that take advantage of Gramsci's subalternity resort to creative readings, built on an eclectic theoretical apparatus. It is worth mentioning the Indian historiographical analysis, in the subalternist project, which appropriates the concept and then makes use of the postmodern and poststructuralist conception to subsidize the postcolonial critique, which arrives in Latin America and leads to the formation of the Latin subalternist project -American. Therefore, we intend to analyze how the subaltern subject is defined in debates in Brazil.
