As we move into the 21st century, the geopolitical contours of a conflict on a global scale have become increasingly clear – by antagonizing China, the United States has led some analysts to speak of a second Cold War. In this article I try to demonstrate that, in fact, the displacement of the North American strategic axis towards the Pacific Ocean presents considerable parallels with the Containment strategy employed against the Soviet bloc. I tried, however, to expose the difficulties of the United States reissuing this strategy in the face of an adversary whose foreign policy has shown itself to be increasingly innovative.
