Abstract

In this paper, we explore the conception of nature as a book in Francis Bacon. On the one hand, using this image and confronting the reading of the book of nature and the reading of the books of established authors, Bacon contrasts two completely different ways of the natural philosophy: the Interpretation of Nature in contrast to the Anticipation of the Mind. On the other hand, by considering the revealed book and the book of creatures, Bacon contends for the specificity of the scientific investigation of nature and its relative autonomy in relation to the sphere of religion, although he indicates the character of continuity and complementation of the two books of the same authorship.

  • Celi Hirata, Universidade Federal de São Carlos.

    Possui Graduação (2004), Mestrado (2008) e Doutorado (2012) em Filosofia pela Universidade de São Paulo, sendo que a sua tese de Doutorado foi laureada com o Prêmio Capes de Filosofia 2013. Realizou estágio de doutorado sanduíche na Universität zu Köln com bolsa CNPq/DAAD. É membro da comissão editorial dos Cadernos Espinosanos e da Rede Iberoamericana Leibniz. Atualmente é professora adjunta de História da Filosofia Moderna no Departamento de Filosofia da UFSCar e realiza pesquisa sobre a necessidade e a liberdade em Hobbes.
