Resumo Este artigo discute a importância de compreender melhor os efeitos adversos das mídias sociais e do uso da internet na cognição e saúde humana a partir da ideia de que as tecnologias transcendem a relação sujeito-objeto e modificam a estrutura de conhecimento. Identifica o uso das mídias sociais nas unidades de informação, as quais são usadas predominantemente para promoção dos serviços e produtos, e ainda pouco usada para o ensino-aprendizagem, em especial para o letramento informacional. Conclui argumentando sobre a importância do papel proativo dos bibliotecários no processo formativo dos usuários para o letramento informacional, o que inclui saber usar efetivamente e de maneira crítica as mídias sociais.
