Abstract

The objective of this article is to demonstrate the impossibilitity of using the classic models of democracy proposed by the theoretical currentes of transitology and consolidation for the analysis of contemporary democracy in Latin America. Next, we point out the construction and institutional design of the likely new democratic forms in the region that have been consolidated in the wake of the emergence of new charismatic leaders. We also seek to demonstrate how these new experiences, often called “neopopulist” in the literature, are contributing to the construction of new democratic practices that seem to be more adequate to the exercise of power in the social and economic conditions of vulnerability of the majority of the Latin American population, but departs considerably from the classical concept and practices of Democracy in the western world. Finally, we present a series of questions about the future of the democratic regime in Latin America in the light of ongoing experiences.
