Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the energy expenditure in amputees (transtibial and transfemoral) compared to non-amputated individuals through a systematic review. This review was based on the following databases: PubMed, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science, using a combination of the following keywords: energy expenditure, handicapped, physically disability, amputee, prostheses, sports, physical exercise. A total of 916 papers was identified in the databases. After the exclusion of duplicates and articles that did not meet the eligibility criteria, after reading the titles, abstracts and complete articles, 15 articles were selected for inclusion in the systematic review. The papers were grouped into two different categories: 1) papers that analyzed energy expenditure in amputees compared to non-amputated individuals and 2) papers that analyzed energy expenditure in amputated individuals using different prostheses and in different activities. The present systematic review indicates that amputees present greater energetic expenditure during walking than individuals who are not amputated. In addition, it may be added that: 1) transfemoral amputation generates a higher energy expenditure than transtibial amputation; 2) the greater the velocity and the slope of the walking surface the greater the energy expenditure for amputated individuals, 3) amputees using crutches to walk have a higher energy expenditure compared to amputees using prostheses.
