GEORGE SARTON E THOMAS KUHN: PARA QUE SERVE UMA HISTÓRIA DA CIÊNCIA?

Na evolução da História da Ciência, muitos têm sido os esforços para especificar a finalidade dessa área do conhecimento. Ainda antes da constituição de uma disciplina autônoma, o que só viria a ocorrer na década de 50, diversos estudiosos se empenharam em prol da promoção dos estudos históricos do desenvolvimento científico, uma promoção que continua invariavelmente em escritos posteriores. Neste trabalho, discutimos as perspectivas de George Sarton (1884-1956) e Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996), buscando mostrar como, ao mesmo tempo em que discutem algumas justificativas em prol dos estudos históricos sobre a ciência, eles destacam o caráter inovador de suas propostas de trabalho. Ainda que vistas hoje como muito divergentes, essas propostas exibem alguns traços confluentes que desempenharam um papel significativo na discussão em defesa desse campo de estudos.
