Abstract

The election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018 signaled a moment of fragmentation of the Brazilian social fabric, in which the extreme right-wing ideas defended by the candidate began to dominate the Brazilian public debate. When elected, Bolsonaro tried to guide the conduct of the country's politics under a conservative vision and, in foreign policy, the dominant agenda at first was anti-globalism. This was possible thanks to the international movement of the rise of the extreme right, which enabled a rapprochement between the Brazilian president and his peers. With this, the diplomacy implemented by Ernesto Araújo sought to defend Western values in the international arena and thus achieve gains for Brazil mainly through ideological partnerships. This perception will be visible in the choices made by the national executive on foreign policy issues, as will be demonstrated throughout the text. In this way, this paper seeks to argue about the attempt sought by the president and Itamaraty to seek autonomy through this Western ideological cooperation. However, as will be argued, this attempt was not successful due to two factors: the internal defeats that affected the government, mainly with the COVID-19 pandemic, and Joe Biden's victory in the American elections, symbolizing a defeat of the extreme right-wing political project.
