Abstract

Brazil hosted the Paralympics in 2016. Although restricted, there was an increase in the disclosure of this category. Disclosure of correct information, without the use of expressions to exaggerate or belittle athletes' abilities, may contribute to reducing the stigma between disability and disability. The objective of the current research was to identify if the accomplishment of an activity on the 2016 Paralympics in a school is efficient to increase the knowledge about the subject by the researched population. The research was carried out in four stages: 1) high school students answered a questionnaire to identify previous knowledge about the subject; 2) 10 reports on the Paralympics were analyzed to identify expressions that depreciated or exaggerated the abilities of the athletes; these data contributed to the planning of the activity to publicize the theme; 3) the performance of the gymnastics: adapted sports; and 4) the application of a new questionnaire to ascertain the knowledge built up after the activity. By the adhesion to the activity, the level of participation and the answers of the questionnaire after the gymkhana, it is concluded that with few resources an activity could be carried out that contributed to the publicity of this subject little divulged.
