Abstract

People with physical disabilities are more exposed to the dangers of sedentary lifestyle due to several reasons. The objective fo this article was to identify the functional and environmental facilitators and barriers related to the level of physical activity of people with physical disabilities. We evaluated 41 participants in two rehabilitation and sports care centers in the Belém-PA and Manaus-AM regions. We applied the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0, Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities, and Measure of the Quality of the Environment. Results indicated a significant and moderate correlation was observed between mobility and self-care (r = 0.57; p<0.001), activities of daily living and mobility (r = 0.54; p<0.001), and activities of daily living and self-care (r = 0.51; p<0.001). A weak correlation was observed between activities of daily living and cognition (r = 0.360; p= 0.02). Participation was related to cognition (r = 0.52; p<0.001), mobility (r = 0.50; p<0.001), and interpersonal relationships (r =0.54; p<0.001). We observed a moderate correlation between functionality and cognition (r =0.65; p<0.001) and interpersonal relationships (r = 0.60; p<0.001), having a strong correlation with mobility (r = 0.76; p<0.001), self-care (r = 0.70; p<0.001), activities of daily living (r = 0.70; p<0.001), and participation (r = 0.84; p<0.001). From this study, it can be conclued that the barriers present in the daily lives of people with physical disabilities impact functionality, self-care, interpersonal relationships, mobility, activities of daily living, and social participation.
