Abstract

Wheelchair rugby (WR) is an impact Paralympic sport with a high incidence of sports injuries. The objective of the present study was to identify and analyze sports injuries, and describe, in general, the types of treatments indicated, adopted by a RCR team during the XIII Brazilian WR Championship. This is a cross-sectional study with a descriptive approach, carried out with 12 male athletes from a WR team during the 2021 Brazilian championship. At the end of the championship, a semi-structured questionnaire was administered in a virtual environment using Google Forms®. The statistical and descriptive analysis of the sample profile, injuries and physiotherapeutic treatments performed was carried out using Microsoft Excel 2023. During the championship, 67.0% of the athletes had some type of injury, 45.0% of which were injuries to the musculoskeletal system and 55.0% in the integumentary system. Regarding the incidence of injuries by functional class, 40.2% of injuries were in high class athletes and 26.8% in low class athletes. The treatment adopted by the team's physiotherapist was based on the identification of the injury and the therapeutic resources available, such as therapeutic ultrasound and cryotherapy. Physiotherapy interventions in the treatment of sports injuries during the competition were decisive and allowed the athlete to quickly return to the game, in order to fulfill his technical and tactical role on the court.
