Created in Canada in 1977 and implemented in Brazil in 2005, Wheelchair Rugby (WR) is a popular sport among individuals with quadriplegic. The modality provides the inclusion of people with cervical spinal cord injury, who hardly fit into the judicious sport classification factors of other adapted sports. In this systematic review, it is possible to establish a strategic plan for the identification of risk factors in WR athletes, for adequate preventive action, with a consequent reduction of injuries and withdrawal from the sport. The aim of this study is to identify the main risk factors in the development of injuries arising from wheelchair rugby related to the physical preparation of WR athletes. The systematic review was carried out using the following databases: MedLine (Pubmed), SciELO, LILACS, PEDro, Cochrane and the Virtual Health Library (VHL). The search was conducted between August and December 2021 and no date or language limits were used. The results show that the main risk factors for sports injuries for WR athletes are: (1) overload training; (2) ability to perform activities of daily living; (3) alteration in shoulder cinematics; (4) the wheelchair touch and propulsion technique used; (5) age; (6) tactical function of the player; (7) level of spinal cord injury; (8) shoulder muscle strength imbalance; and (9) scapulohumeral incoordination. In addition, the present review identified a lack of further epidemiological research that identifies, through screening, risk factors for injuries in WR athletes, so that strategies can be implemented to prevent injuries and propose interventions.
