Abstract

I was president of two consecutive terms of the board of directors of the Brazilian Society of Adapted Motor Activity (Sobama). I was, also, a founding member of its inauguration in 1994 at the University of São Paulo, and, throughout the years of Sobama, I realized we all were a small family comprised of friends and colleagues of an emerging area, the adapted physical education area. Inspired by Sobama’s previous leadership, our directive board represented a young generation of leaders around physical education adapted in Brazil, or “adapted motor activity,” terminology instituted at the foundation of the society. It is important to highlight that before the creation of Sobama, USP brought together academics and professionals in the area during the São Paulo State Symposium on Adapted Physical Education, which had its first edition in 1986 and then every two years until 1994. In this report I summarized the historical activities that occurred during the two terms of Sobama’s board of directors under my responsibility between 2004 and 2007.
