Abstract

The aim of this paper is to compare the work of the Argentine Sergio Bagú and the Brazilian Caio Prado Júnior. It seeks to understand the arguments that supported the construction of this thesis and, therefore, to analyze the points of contact and friction between the authors in their works. Both authors started from the same conception to defend the thesis of colonial capitalism: a systemic theory of capitalism. From the criticism of the central ideas of these two authors, the conclusion is reached that Colonial America, in particular Brazil, was formed from the expansion of a late feudal mode of production, characterized by the dominance of mercantile capital and under the control of the Iberian absolutist feudal states, there was no colonial capitalism.
