Hedley Bull and International Society: the persistence of the interstate dimension

Resumo

A despeito de toda a retórica, o pilar fundamental da perspectiva de Hedley Bull e de seus prognósticos sobre a política mundial repousa na defesa intransigente da soberania estatal como o alicerce básico da ordem mundial contemporânea. No entanto, pela erudição, versatilidade e abrangência de sua obra, trata-se de um autor de relevância fundamental para as Relações Internacionais. O objetivo básico deste artigo, no entanto, é destacar um aspecto que nem sempre se ressalta: a peculiar incursão de Hedley Bull pela antropologia social, particularmente no que diz respeito à análise da anarquia como elemento ordenador das (mal) chamadas “sociedades sem Estado”.

Abstract: The main argument of this paper is that, despite all rhetoric, the fundamental pillar of Hedley Bull's perspective rests on the intransigent defense of state sovereignty as the basic foundation of the contemporary world order. However, by the erudition, versatility and scope of his work, he is an author of fundamental relevance. The basic aim of this paper, however, is to highlight one aspect that is not always emphasized: Hedley Bull's peculiar incursion into social anthropology, particularly with regard to the analysis of anarchy as an organizational principle in “primitive” anarchical systems.
