Abstract

This article aims to analyse the documents of the BRICS Fortaleza summit held in July 2014 that created two financial institutions, the New Development Bank – NDB and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement – CRA. They are important initiatives to strengthen the ties of the group that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, as well as serve to broaden the international monetary and financial order. NDB and CRA are complementary to traditional multilateral Bretton Woods institutions: The World Bank and the IMF. Complementary, because a cautious orientation was adopted in the creation of these BRICS arrangements. Such alternative arrangements have incorporated many prerogatives and principles of the World Bank and IMF, such as the need for each member country to agree to access a relevant part of the resources in the CRA. Even incorporating prerogatives and the dominant principles in these traditional NDB and CRA organisations create institutional environments with the potential to enable further unfoldings.

Possui graduação em Ciências Sociais pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (2017) Licenciatura Plena/Bacharelado. Com ênfase na área de Ciência Política.

    GILBERTO MARINGONI DE OLIVEIRA is professor of International Relations at Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC). He is also a Ph.D. in Social History from the Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas da Universidade de São Paulo (2006), graduated from the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da USP (1986) and journalist. He has experience in the area of ??History, with emphasis in contemporary Latin America, History of the press and History of Brazil Empire. Has studies focused on the themes: international relations, development models and communications. He is the author of twelve books, including The Invincible Venezuela - Poder, petróleo e intriga nos tempos de Chávez (Editora Fundação Perseu Abramo, 2004), A revolução venezuelana (Editora Unesp, 2009), Angelo Agostini, A imprensa ilustrada da Corte à Capital Federal, 1864-1910 (Devir, 2011) - finalist of the Jabuti Prize 2012, da Câmara Brasileira do Livro, category biography - and Direitos Humanos - Imagens do Brasil (Aori, 2010). He was a Fellow of the National Program for Economic Research (PNPE) at the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA - 2008 / 2011), and editor of the magazine Desafios do Desenvolvimento, from the same institution (2011-2012). He is a member of the Reflection Group on International Relations (GR-RI)
