This paper analyzes the political and economic specificities that influenced the collapse of the Venezuelan Petro-State during the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. For this, the research analyzed the main economic and social indicators, with emphasis on those related to the oil industry and the evolution of the country's political process over the last few years. Among the results, the research identified that the causes of the deterioration of socioeconomic indicators were related to the collapse of oil production and the economic policy mistakes that had been dragged on since the Chávez era, and which was accelerated with the economic sanctions imposed on the country in 2017 and 2019. However, despite the instability generated by the unprecedented economic collapse in national history, internal and external variables, such as the acceleration of the “autocratization” process and the support of international allies, allowed Nicolás Maduro to maintain Venezuela's political power at the expense of the country's democratic institutions.
