Abstract: The basic purpose of this article is to highlight some basic elements of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon’s thought that can illuminate the theoretical debate in the International Relations. The most salient aspect of his view is the characterization of anarchy not as a problem or a condition to be overcome, but as the model for a free society. This argument, of immediate interest to IRs, is a derivation from its peculiar view of immanence: every society is the product of force, which engenders a dynamic set of antinomies that cannot be overcome. Therefore, there is no telos in history and no transcendent principle capable of guiding the emancipatory social struggle. Therefore, the systematic struggle against attempts to concentrate power is the main objective of those who want to build a society composed of free individuals.
