Abstract

The States Parties of The Southern Common Market (Mercosur) comprise a group of nations that have a low level of development, consequence of colonization and peripheral international insertion. Mercosur, although initially conceived only for commercial purposes, has emerged as an alternative for promoting development in the region, especially through public policy related to family farming. The agriculture’s scenario in these countries is dominated by landowning production, where family farming has no space. As such, the Specialized Meeting on Family Farming of MERCOSUR (REAF) became a space for discussion in regards to these issues. Thus, this article presents initial reflections on different policies for family farming developed by REAF.
